These themes are addressed in the ancient prophecy which was communicated to Manfred's grandfather in a dream: "That the castle and lordship of Otranto should pass from the present family, whenever the real owner should be grown too large to inhabit it" (p.17). The reader is introduced to this cryptic message in the opening scene although its exact meaning isn't revealed until the narrative's close. Prophecies and revelations are typical conventions of much Gothic literature. This is evident in Otranto as the ancient prophecy provides the catalyst for much of Manfred's actions and intentions. Gothic elements include Walpole's use of the supernatural, a device which would become a literary standby in modern romance. Most of the ghostly manifestations which beset Otranto's inhabitants are associated with the theme of rightful succession. The gigantic foot and hand which suddenly materialize in the great chamber and on the staircase respectively form part of a build up to the climatic return of Alfonso the Good, "dilated to an immense magnitude" (p.112), as are other unearthly instances, such as the ghost of Manfred's grandfather and the blood dripping from Alfonso's statue. Alfonso's return brings about a range of startling revelations concerning the nefarious deeds of Manfred's grandfather. It also establishes the peasant Theodore, who has subsequently been revealed to be of noble blood, as the castle's rightful heir.|The conflict in Ukraine has reached a perilous new chapter, with Russian troops reportedly crossing over the country’s eastern border after Moscow yesterday formally recognized two Russian-leaning separatist enclaves there. The humanitarian cost of a full-scale Russian invasion, and a fight by Ukraine to defend its territory, could be enormous. "There will be losses," Ukraine’s defense minister, Oleksiy Reznikov, told troops today. The global economic implications of the conflict remain hard to figure, with Western sanctions on Russia potentially ramping up in response to how far and how aggressively its troops push into Ukraine. Stock markets fell sharply and the price of commodities like oil soared in early trading today, but these moves moderated in the past few hours, as investors tried to assess what it all means. Western officials are ratcheting up their economic threats against Russia. Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany today halted certification of Nord Stream 2, a crucial pipeline designed to ferry Russian natural gas to his country. As an interagency partner, NBACC coordinates a range of scientific, technical, operational, and infrastructure-related activities that enhance scientific collaboration and productivity. In addition, NBACC established a "Work for Others" program that makes the NBACC national security biocontainment capabilities more broadly available to federal agencies. NBACC is a key contributor of research expertise and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities to the work executed through the S&T Probabilistic Assessment of National Threats Hazards and Risks (PANTHR) program and in coordination with the S&T Hazard Awareness Characterization Technology Center (HAC-TC). In support of the PANTHR program’s focus, scientists from NBACC conducted groundbreaking research on the stability of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus causing COVID-19). For instance, data produced by researchers at NBACC is used in S&T’s SARS-CoV-2 estimated airborne and surface stability calculators. For more information regarding NBACC's research efforts, read about how the lab’s past and present work through S&T helps inform current and future pandemic response. As a matter of practice, NBACC coordinates with other national laboratories to enhance research capabilities, share lessons learned, and provide training more efficiently. In addition, NBACC also collaborates with the Department of Defense and National Institutes of Health to plan and conduct research to address gaps and needs in biodefense. The NBFAC component of NBACC provides the FBI with bioforensic testing and analysis on suspected biothreat samples, including analyses of ricin envelopes mailed to public officials. NBACC has supported more than 100 federal law enforcement cases.

Ukraine live news Russia’s support for separatists in Ukraine has put Beijing in a "tough spot", said David Gitter, president of the Center for Advanced China Research, as it takes a hard line against suspected "separatists" in regions like Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong and the self-ruled democracy of Taiwan. China has never recognised Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea, although Gitter said that Putin’s use of "cultural and historical affinities" with Ukraine might provide some future legitimacy as China’s Communist Party uses similar arguments to claim sovereignty over Taiwan. Another reason is that despite growing closer with Russia, China still has a close economic relationship with Ukraine. Trade between the two countries amounted to $15.4bn in 2020, according to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine. Among Ukraine’s exports to China are raw materials like ore, slag and ash used in important domestic industries like construction. Similarly, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has pitched Ukraine as China’s "bridge" to Europe, which is also an important market for Chinese goods. Vision-and-language understanding is an important problem which has largely attracted the attention from both the computer vision (CV) and natural language processing (NLP) communities. Among tasks in this area, the temporal localization of moments remains a fundamental and challenging one. Although these models are more efficient than previous propose-and-rank-based approaches, they still require a considerable amount of computation and/or memory since they need to process the whole input video at once. Despite their success, one main drawback of these models is their computational cost, being a greatly limiting factor for many, with memory usage ballooning as model sizes increase to attain better performance. The advent of new, deeper Transformer-based models for image and video understanding suggests that these problems are likely to become more relevant in the CV community as well. This is exemplified by many existing developments in Transformer models for video understanding only being capable of processing short inputs at a time due to memory constraints. Foldit was born. Almost immediately, it began paying dividends. In this next section, we'll take a closer look at how Foldit works, what gamers have accomplished with it and whether or not they cured HIV. In Foldit, players use a simple box of tools to manipulate the shape of a protein. The idea is to bend, twist, move and shake the protein's side chains and amino acid backbones such that the whole structure is packed into its optimum shape. Players know their solution works when they get rid of collisions between side chains of atoms, hide the hydrophobic chains inside the protein, face the hydrophilic chains outward and remove large empty spaces that threaten the stability of the protein -- all of which is reflected in their score. Thermodynamics tells us that natural systems tend toward states of lower energy. Other physical laws, such as the mutual attraction of opposite charges, repulsion of like charges and limitations regarding how atomic bonds can be arranged and rotated, are also built in.|In today’s era of digital misinformation, we are increasingly faced with new threats posed by video falsification techniques. Such falsifications range from cheapfakes (e.g., lookalikes or audio dubbing) to deepfakes (e.g., sophisticated AI media synthesis methods), which are becoming perceptually indistinguishable from real videos. To tackle this challenge, we propose a multi-modal semantic forensic approach to discover clues that go beyond detecting discrepancies in visual quality, thereby handling both simpler cheapfakes and visually persuasive deepfakes. In this work, our goal is to verify that the purported person seen in the video is indeed themselves by detecting anomalous correspondences between their facial movements and the words they are saying. We leverage the idea of attribution to learn person-specific biometric patterns that distinguish a given speaker from others. We use interpretable Action Units (AUs) to capture a persons’ face and head movement as opposed to deep CNN visual features, and we are the first to use word-conditioned facial motion analysis. Unlike existing person-specific approaches, our method is also effective against attacks that focus on lip manipulation.

A water mixture that's super chilled to well below freezing. Once the water freezes, at night when energy demand is low, it's ready to be used to cool the air the next day. This is called charging, and a charged off-peak cooling system takes very little energy to keep cold in stand-by mode until it's ready to be used to cool the air in an office building or home. As the building starts to warm up during the day, the air-conditioning kicks on, and the chilled refrigerant from the off-peak cooling system keeps the building's air cool. The glycol cycles through the ice filled tanks periodically to cool back down after being exposed to the hot air, and eventually, this exchange of hot for cold melts the ice. In the evening, the system charges again, freezing the melted ice with a chiller, and preparing the system for the next hot day. More complex systems can use other forms of refrigerant for cooling or use different design strategies for storing ice.|In May 2011, Americans were surprised by a sudden television appearance by President Barack Obama. He revealed that after a daring raid by U.S. Pakistan, al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden was dead. While the Navy SEAL team that cornered and killed bin Laden became national heroes, another unheralded group played a crucial role in the successful mission. For months leading up to the raid, staffers from the National Security Council (NSC) had organized more than two dozen meetings involving multiple government agencies. In attendance were the NSC's principals, including National Security Adviser Tom Donilon, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and others. Obama went around the table, asking each adviser for an opinion on the raid, and weighed that information. When a president has to take action, it's crucial to have well-researched policy options on the table, and experts and advisers who can help him pick the best one. Once the decision has been made, it's vital to have someone coordinating the government's various departments and agencies to make sure they work together to achieve it. "It primarily refers to refraining from military activities near our borders and the development of military and military-technical presence in those territories," Ryabkov said during a panel discussion on international affairs. He emphasized that Russia wants legally-binding guarantees of its security, noting that Western powers broke verbal promises - given to Moscow in the early 1990s - that NATO wouldn’t expand eastward. "There is a deep crisis in the Euro-Atlantic region that is fraught with a potential conflict," Ryabkov said, adding that a controversy similar in scope to the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis between the U.S. Soviet Union couldn’t be excluded. The Cuban Missile Crisis erupted when the Soviet Union deployed its missiles to Cuba and the U.S. U.S. President John F. Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev agreed to defuse tensions by making a deal for Moscow to withdraw its missiles in exchange for Washington’s pledge not to invade Cuba and the removal of U.S. "If the other side doesn’t get it and it continues like it goes now, the logic of developments could lead us to suddenly waking up to something like that," Ryabkov. "It may easily come to that.|What is essential to know about the rising tensions in eastern Europe and the Ukraine-Russia crisis? Melvyn Levitsky, professor of international policy and practice at the University of Michigan Ford School of Public Policy, shares his insights. He is a retired U.S. U.S.-Soviet bilateral relations. Political officer at the U.S. S.-Soviet bilateral relations. Political officer at the U.S. Soviet bilateral relations. Political officer at the U.S.S. Embassy in Moscow. There’s always been tension between Russia. Ukraine during the Soviet Union. If you go way back during the Stalin (Joseph Stalin) period, millions of people died when he collectivized all the private farms. Also, in the Second World War, some collaboration between the Nazis came through Ukraine, and certain Ukrainians and the Soviets-now the Russians-have been quite suspect of Ukraine itself. We need to know that Putin wants to reconstitute at least some spheres of influence that came about when the Soviet Union broke up. On the other hand, the ease with which you can view RSS headlines may convince you that you can subscribe to even more sites. You may end up spending just as much time reading feeds as you used to on regular Web sites. Reading feeds requires a few simple things, many of which you already have. You'll need a computer -- or compatible electronic device -- and an Internet connection. After that, you need something that can read, or aggregate, RSS files. Aggregators collect. Interpret RSS feeds in one location. That way, you can see the latest headlines from HowStuffWorks, CNN, the BBC and Reuters, all in one place. Or do you just want the headlines? Do you want everything organized by date, with the feeds mixed by most recent, or would you prefer to keep each site separate? These are options that your aggregator will give you help you enjoy your reading. Aggregators take many forms.|President Joe Biden warned Russia's Vladimir Putin on Thursday that the U.S. Russia if it takes further military action against Ukraine, while Putin responded that such a U.S. The two leaders spoke frankly for nearly an hour amid growing alarm over Russia's troop buildup near Ukraine, a crisis that has deepened as the Kremlin has stiffened its insistence on border security guarantees and test-fired hypersonic missiles to underscore its demands. A lot of mistakes have been made over the past 30 years, and we would better avoid more such mistakes in this situation," Ushakov said. Russia's demands are to be discussed during the talks in Geneva, but it remains unclear what, if anything, Biden would be willing to offer Putin in exchange for defusing the crisis. Draft security documents Moscow submitted demand that NATO deny membership to Ukraine and other former Soviet countries and roll back military deployments in Central and Eastern Europe. The U.S. and its allies have refused to offer Russia the kind of guarantees on Ukraine that Putin wants, citing NATO’s principle that membership is open to any qualifying country.
